The CFP® Professional

CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification is the standard for financial planning. CFP® professionals meet rigorous education, training and ethical standards, and commit to CFP Board to serve their clients' best interests. The CFP® professional is well-versed in these major personal financial planning areas: Professional Conduct and Regulation, General Principles of Financial Planning, Risk Management and Insurance Planning, Investment Planning, Tax Planning, Retirement Savings and Income Planning, Estate Planning, Psychology of Financial Planning, Financial Plan Development (Capstone Course). As part of the CFP® certification, CFP® professionals also have made a commitment to CFP Board to act as a fiduciary when providing financial advice to a client.

    The Standard in Financial Advice

Financial planners are in high demand. In today's economy, people are increasingly partnering with financial planners to ensure a confident financial future. Established in 1973, CFP® certification is the most widely recognized financial planning credential. Today, 1 in 3 advisors hold the CFP® marks. CFP® professionals provide financial plans covering 10+ areas (retirement planning, estate planning, taxes, insurance, etc.).

    Icon Image
    The Exam

The CFP® exam is a 170-question, multiple-choice test that consists of two 3-hour sessions over one day. The exam includes stand-alone and scenario-based questions, as well as questions associated with case studies. Test topics include the financial planning process and principles, tax planning, income and retirement planning, estate planning, risk management and insurance, among other important topics. All facets of the exam are guided by CFP® professionals, including determination of content coverage, scoring and passing criteria.

    Education

The two-part education requirement includes both (1) completing coursework on financial planning through a CFP Board Registered Program, and (2) holding a bachelor's degree or higher (in any discipline) from an accredited college or university. Earning CFP® certification requires 12-18 months of study, reflecting dedication to client service. The education requirement helps to provide the knowledge required to deliver professional, competent and ethical financial planning services to clients. There are two main parts to the requirement: completion of CFP Board-approved coursework, and a bachelor's degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university.

    Icon Image
    Ethics

CFP Board's initial ethics standard for CFP® certification requires an applicant to (1) commit to CFP Board to comply with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, and (2) demonstrate ethical fitness for CFP® certification. The Fitness Standards provides the standards against which CFP Board will evaluate the ethical fitness of a candidate. The ethics requirement is an important step on the path to CFP® certification. CFP® professionals must commit to CFP Board to act as a fiduciary, which means acting in the best interests of the client at all times when providing financial advice — and commit to other high ethical and conduct standards.
