How We Do It

It all comes down to Original Thinking, our mantra for over 50 years, a disruptive growth strategy that decommoditizes a commodity business. The Hansberger Group is a comprehensive wealth management practice with a proprietary investment platform embedded within. We compete on the power of our investment discipline and original ideas. In a time of an overload of advice today, what is still in short supply are insights and real innovation in investment management.

Our goal is to identify enough original ideas to build an investment portfolio of 25-30 companies in various economic sectors, such as health care, consumer spending, technology, financial services, and energy, among others. We believe it is the price you pay that determines your investment return; therefore, we endeavor to never overpay. Note that we are looking for very special businesses with special managements, so we would rather pay a fair price for a great company than a great price for only a fair company.

It is our strong conviction that much of professional investment management today has been commoditized. We believe most money managers are indexers and follow the crowd; most have no relationship with the actual investor. By contrast, we wish to educate and work closely with our clients. We want them to fully grasp our discipline, to understand that they own a piece of these businesses, to follow not only their share prices but also their progress and successes as businesses. As a result, we often hold many portfolio companies for a very long time. Our turnover is low, and we are constantly searching for and adding new positions to the portfolios with the commitment to the original idea.
