My Story

Managing your financial life is all about balance. Intelligent investing, for example, is a balance between the returns you earn and the risk you incur. Financial planning balances what you have versus what you’ll need for the future. Effective cash flow management means balancing what you bring in versus what you pay out. While some advisors focus exclusively on investments, Jody applies this style of “balanced” wealth management to every financial recommendation he makes to his clients

Jody’s areas of focus include endowments, foundations, high net worth individuals, family businesses, law practices, land preservation trusts, structured settlements, and special needs trusts.

Jody is a Family Wealth Advisor, a designation earned by a select group of Morgan Stanley financial advisors. Previously, with UBS Financial Services, Inc., he was recognized by the UBS PACESETTER Recognition Council as one of the Firm’s leading financial advisors.

Jody graduated from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration. He later received a Masters of Arts in Finance from The Manderson School of Business at The University of Alabama with concentrations in Investment Management, Global Real Estate, and Global Capital Markets.

Jody has served on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and was part of their Act II Crew. He is a member of The Director’s Circle at The Montgomery Museum of Fine Art. Jody attends First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL, with his two sons, Duncan and Thomas.

A Distinctive Approach to Goals-Based Investing
Constructing an investment portfolio starts with a goal, or a series of goals – how much do you want to accomplish, what do you need to do to live the way that you want to live?

To reach your goals, it’s important to aim for a rational projected rate of return on your portfolio, but that’s still not enough. You also need to think about liabilities – fees, taxes and various forms of risk.

Before Jody makes investment recommendations, he works with his clients to establish concrete goals. He then constructs portfolios based on a total wealth management approach that uses assets earned to fund the liabilities that clients incur over time.
Structuring Your Accounts - A Different Way to Think About Your Wealth Plan
As a wealth manager, Jody often talks to clients about specific and discrete goals – paying for college, buying a second home, or taking the trip of a lifetime. However, there are other goals that are more than just single events. These goals are anticipated life stages such as retirement or having grandchildren. Accumulating assets for both discrete goals and long-term life stages requires a comprehensive, seamless integration of dynamic planning strategies.

To make sense of this, Jody uses a “3 Bucket” system. Broadly speaking, Jody helps his clients divide their assets into Operating Money, Reserve Money and Long Term Money. Each of these three “Buckets” is designed for its own purpose and the assets are managed accordingly. This system helps clients financially prepare for every discrete event and life stage, as well as unplanned opportunities or challenges that inevitably arise.
Institutional Investors - The Tax Advantages of Experience and Professional Focus
Institutions seeking informed advice and thoughtful solutions are often in a bind – many are not big enough for a major institutional advisor, yet they have complex needs that a typical money manager might not be able address. Jody’s background in working with organizations and institutions allows him to bridge this gap for his clients.

Throughout his career, Jody has worked with land preservation trusts, insurance companies, and businesses requiring assistance with corporate cash management and retirement plan management.

Depending on the particular needs of these clients, Jody often leverages the vast global resources of Morgan Stanley to get specific answers to complicated questions. As a result, Jody’s clients receive the knowledge, solutions and excellence in service they deserve, common advantages of working with a boutique-style firm.
