My Story and Services

As the son of another Morgan Stanley financial advisor, Bill Smith, Harrison has experienced firsthand the powerful impact a trusting relationship and comprehensive plan can have on a client’s future. Having honed his financial planning skills through extensive training and creating customized plans for senior Morgan Stanley financial advisors, Harrison Smith now helps successful individuals and their families maintain the financial independence they’ve worked their whole lives to achieve.

Having grown up with technology, Harry understands the attraction of trying to automate your financial life with a robo advisor, especially for younger investors. This approach, however, will never fully capture your unique goals, values, and circumstances the way a personal conversation can. Only through a Morgan Stanley financial advisor, can one leverage the unmatched range of investment solutions available through Morgan Stanley, including the firm’s Investing with Impact program and alternatives platform.

Through working with Harrison Smith, you will get a financial coach who goes beyond your investment portfolio to understand the purpose of your wealth and provides white glove service that forms the basis of a long-term relationship. Harry’s role is not to maximize your return potential, as many investment firms like to emphasize, but help you understand the importance of risk management and sticking to a well thought plan. As Harry’s father has taught him, these are the keys to achieving positive outcomes.

A native of Portland, Maine, Harrison serves as a financial advisor working primarily with pre-retiree clients in the Boston area and Maine. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2017, Harry spent two years as a financial representative and workplace planner for Fidelity Investments. He believes that working as part of a team has been a key to his success thus far. Harrison lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse in high school before being recruited to play football at Hampden Sydney College, where he played safety for four years. Away from work, Harrison enjoys volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club of Boston and hitting the slopes at Sugarloaf.

Our Five-Step Process

Our wealth management approach focuses on you, your family and your career – where you are today and where you want to go. Working together, we develop the strategies to help get you there, navigating life’s challenges and helping you make more informed decisions about your wealth.

    Icon Image
    2. Get To Know You Meeting
We continue the dialogue by fostering an in-depth conversation where we learn about the values that shape your decisions and identify any unique circumstances. We also review the documents you’ve prepared and define your priorities.

    3. Analysis & Plan Development
    3. Analysis & Plan Development
Here, we utilize proprietary financial planning tools to develop a personalized and detailed plan with recommendations to help you grow, preserve and transfer your wealth.

    4. Implementation
In this step, we present appropriate strategies that are designed to work together to achieve your goals. Upon your approval, we open new accounts for you at Morgan Stanley and initiate our investment recommendations. We’ll also begin to implement other strategies we’ve discussed. These often encompass tax minimization strategies, as well as risk management and estate planning techniques.

    5. Ongoing Service
Committed to premium service, we focus on developing a relationship that provides special value to you and your family. As we begin to execute each strategy, we’ll set up tools so you have immediate access to your account information. And because markets and personal needs evolve over time, we set up ongoing meetings to ensure your plan remains on schedule to achieve your goals.

Alternatives and Impact Investing

Stocks and bonds form the core of most diversified portfolios but relying simply on these traditional assets could prevent you from optimizing your asset allocation and cause your wealth to have less of an impact than you intended. As a Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor, I can help you take advantage of the firm’s alternatives platform and Investing with Impact program which offer a wide range of additional investment choices that can enable you to do more with your assets.
    Icon Image
    Sustainable Investments
Every client has their own motivations for doing good for their community or supporting societal causes like reducing global warming or promoting social equality. Millennials and women, in particular, have expressed a strong desire to invest based on their values. Morgan Stanley’s Investing with Impact platform applies sophisticated research and manager due diligence to give clients a broad lineup of sustainable, socially responsible and ESG focused investment solutions that also provide a competitive financial return. In fact, research has shown sustainability-based indices have performed in line or better than conventional indices with less volatility.

    Alternative Investments
Alternative investments, such as real assets, private equity and hedge funds, can play an important role in your asset allocation. Adding alternatives exposure may reduce volatility and potentially increase returns by accessing investments that behave differently from stocks and bonds. Selecting the right managers to oversee your investments is even more critical when it comes to alternatives and Morgan Stanley offers deep research on a wide range of alternative solutions.

2The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.

3Alternative Investments are speculative and include a high degree of risk. An investor could lose all or a substantial amount of his/her investment. Alternative investments are appropriate only for qualified, long-term investors who are willing to forgo liquidity and put capital at risk for an indefinite period of time.

4Municipal bonds may not be appropriate for all investors. Income generated from an investment in a municipal bond is generally exempt from federal income taxes. Some income may be subject to state and local taxes and to the federal alternative minimum tax. Capital gains, if any, are subject to tax.
Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC (“Morgan Stanley”) and its Financial Advisors and Private Wealth Advisors do not provide any tax/legal advice. Consult your own tax/legal advisor before making any tax or legal-related investment decisions.

5When Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC, its affiliates and Morgan Stanley Financial Advisors and Private Wealth Advisors (collectively, “Morgan Stanley”) provide “investment advice” regarding a retirement or welfare benefit plan account, an individual retirement account or a Coverdell education savings account (“Retirement Account”), Morgan Stanley is a “fiduciary” as those terms are defined under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, as amended (“ERISA”), and/or the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (the “Code”), as applicable. When Morgan Stanley provides investment education, takes orders on an unsolicited basis or otherwise does not provide “investment advice”, Morgan Stanley will not be considered a “fiduciary” under ERISA and/or the Code. 7Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
