My Story and Services

My unique background and love of developing innovative solutions to complex issues have blessed me with a special affinity for the distinctive needs of executives, entrepreneurs, athletes, artists and their families.

I've worked in finance for more than two decades, the past ten years with Morgan Stanley where I'm a Senior Vice President, Financial Advisor, Portfolio Management Director and Global Sports and Entertainment Director.

After receiving my bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of San Diego and a master's degree in finance from St. Mary's College of California I joined the corporate world, eventually becoming responsible for the $1.2 billion fixed income and equity portfolios of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. I understand how corporate executives can become focused on their company's success and back burner their own finances.

I next became the principal of the internet start-up HandyAuction. In charge of finance, operations and business development, I was able to grow sales from $0 to $350,000 in its first year and secure SBA credit lines of approximately $1 million. My entrepreneurial history helps me appreciate how business value and personal wealth can become entwined.

My continuing fascination with finance and a love of teaching then led me to earn a certificate in Financial Planning from Teachers College, Columbia University and join Wells Fargo Advisors as a Municipal Solicitor and Portfolio Manager working with corporations, governments and executives. I returned to my alma mater Saint Mary's as an adjunct professor teaching finance at its graduate business school. My teaching experience has served me well in working with the families of my clients.

While my wife and three children can attest to my lack of athletic prowess, my college roommate's career in the NBA and coaching drew me into the worlds of professional sports and entertainment. I'm a Board Member of the Nigerian Basketball Foundation which supports that nation's Olympic team and have received the NFL Players' Association Registered Institutional Player Financial Advisor designation.

I'm passionate about developing effective and efficient solutions for my clients' singular needs and welcome hearing from you.

Families and wealth growing together

Every affluent family is unique, not just due to the circumstances that formed the family wealth, and how that wealth has been invested, but also due to personalities, histories and values; family culture. As your family and its wealth has grown, your needs have evolved from the tactical—such as stock selection—to the strategic—like asset allocation—and now to the philosophical—family governance and legacy, for example:

  • How much of your wealth do you want your heirs to inherit, and are they ready to handle it?
  • How can you leave control of your business to one child while being fair to your other children?
  • Now that you've sold or relinquished control of your business, what will become your new mission?
  • How can you increase the impact of your charitable donations, and ensure ongoing family philanthropy?
  • Who should take charge of managing the family assets if you become incapacitated?

Offering insights and empathy

When your family wealth has reached the level at which you're asking these questions, you may need an insightful and empathetic family office style advisory relationship. I have developed just this type of relationship with other wealthy families, coupling my experience and insights with the global resources of Morgan Stanley to provide comprehensive bespoke services.

It’s time to focus on yourself

You've always focused on the business, rather than yourself. That's one of the many reasons you've become successful. Success has now translated into personal wealth. However, much of that wealth consists of either restricted stock grants or options, the value of your business, or both.

You know you should be taking advantage of this wealth to help meet the goals you've established for yourself and your family, but the tasks seem daunting:

  • Regulatory complications
  • Tax implications
  • Family ramifications
  • Portfolio diversification
  • Liquidity needs

Offering expertise and innovation

Resolving this cluster of issues may be idiosyncratic and challenging, but it isn't insurmountable. It requires experience and innovation. I can help you craft an efficient and effective personalized and comprehensive wealth, strategy for your unique situation.

Among the elements we can explore are:

  • Rule 144 sales of restricted and control securities
  • Loans secured by eligible restricted and control stock
  • Gifting of restricted or control stock to individuals, funds, foundations or organizations
  • The creation and implementation of Rule 10b5-1 plans
  • The use of exchange funds
  • Inter family loans and self-cancelling installment notes
  • Employee stock ownership plans
  • IPO, LBO or other sale to private equity investor
  • Sale to a strategic acquirer

The challenges of your special success

Your journey to wealth has been along the road less travelled. Maybe your dream was just to make a living as an artist doing what you love. Or perhaps your going pro was always a long shot. But you exceeded even your own expectations. Your talent, dedication and determination have resulted in your living the dream.

Success and wealth come with special challenges and risks for athletes and artists.

  • An athlete's earnings window can come in youth, be very short, and could be shortened further at any moment due to injury.
  • An artist's success could be equally brief, but also subject to the unpredictability of public sentiment.
  • You need to plan for your own second act, or for unpredictable income fluctuations.
  • You need to manage generational wealth for your family.

Offering experience and creativity

You need someone who can help you tackle situations and game plan for scenarios that are different than those the typical wealthy individual faces. You need someone who has experience helping people like yourself and families like yours. I have the creativity and experience to help athletes and artists navigate the challenge of turning newfound mercurial wealth into stable longterm wealth.
Among the elements we can explore are:

  • Developing and managing a support staff
  • Portfolio diversification and liquidity options to overcome income fluctuation
  • Trusts, 529 Plans and insurance options to take care of family members
  • Family governance, wealth education and education planning
  • Philanthropic options such as direct lifetime donations, charitable gift annuities, and private foundations
  • Captive insurance for unique risks such as public image
  • Monetizing intellectual property and likeness and image
  • Personal and home security analysis
  • Including equity compensation in endorsement deals

10An investment in an exchange-traded fund (ETF) involves risks similar to those of investing in a broadly based portfolio of equity securities traded on exchange in the relevant securities market, such as market fluctuations caused by such factors as economic and political developments, changes in interest rates and perceived trends in stock prices. The investment return and principal value of ETF investments will fluctuate, so that an investor’s ETF shares, if or when sold, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of an exchange-traded fund (ETF) before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information about the ETF. To obtain a prospectus, contact your Financial Advisor or visit the ETF company’s website. Please read the prospectus carefully before investing.
