My Story

Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you might end up someplace else.” I believe that nowhere is this more true than in investing and wealth management. That’s why, with every client, I start with your goals. Defining and articulating your goals gives us a road map – a way to determine which strategies to pursue, how much risk to take on, what alternative to select. What are your goals? Many people have only a general idea – retire confidently, take care of my family. But together, we follow a defined process to help you determine specific, concrete goals that we can put a number on. Only then can I develop a plan designed to reach them. That’s why I insist that every client “buy into” my process – I am confident it will help you achieve your objectives.

I work with a limited number of clients, so I can provide personal, proactive service. Comprehensive goals-based financial planning involves more than investments – as a Certified Financial Planner, I have the knowledge and training to deliver thoughtful advice and recommendations for every decision involving money, to ensure it aligns with your goals. I am also a practicing branch manager, so I am able to efficiently access the vast resources of Morgan Stanley, one of the leading financial institutions in the world. Working with me is like having your own personal cfo, but instead of pursuing corporate profits, we are working toward what you want most in your life.

GPS and DATA: A Customized Goals Planning System

Do you view your wealth as a means to live the way you want to live? My clients want to use their wealth – to educate their children and/or grandchildren, to ensure a comfortable retirement, to feel confident about their health care and living options as they age, to maintain their lifestyle … and many other things.

Morgan Stanley's GPS approach begins with determining specific financial and life goals for the short-, medium- and long-term, then following a process in pursuit of those goals. I call my system DATA:
  • Discover
I begin with a comprehensive understanding of your financial situation, generating a consolidated view of your assets, liabilities and investments.
  • Advise/Implement
I then create a customized and comprehensive plan to address your goals, including a thorough analysis of probability of success and downside risk. I recommend an appropriate asset allocation strategy and implement the plan using advanced analytics to select appropriate (and tax-efficient) securities.
  • Track
Because both life and the markets are unpredictable, we use a variety of measurements and analytics to track your progress.
  • Adjust
We recommend specific adjustments to your plan to reflect changing markets and evolving circumstances. For more information about this final step, please see the tab called “Progress.”
Comprehensive wealth management is more than just investing. Every financial decision affects the next one, and the one after that. I provide solutions that reflect both sides of your personal balance sheet, and can access specialists for everything from cash management and lending to estate and wealth transfer planning.

  • The investments listed may not be suitable for all investors. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC recommends that investors independently evaluate particular investments, and encourages investors to seek the advice of a financial advisor. The appropriateness of a particular investment will depend upon an investor's individual circumstances and objectives.

The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria.

Since life insurance and long term care insurance are medically underwritten, you should not cancel your current policy until your new policy is in force. A change to your current policy may incur charges, fees and costs. A new policy will require a medical exam. Surrender charges may be imposed and the period of time for which the surrender charges apply may increase with a new policy. You should consult with your own tax advisors regarding your potential tax liability on surrenders.

    1. Although they may be admitted attorneys, planning directors and other wealth planning center personnel holding legal degrees are acting purely in a non-representative capacity. Neither they nor Morgan Stanley provide tax or legal advice to clients or to Morgan Stanley.

Working with a select group of successful professionals and executives, I provide comprehensive, goals-based investment and financial solutions and advice. My rigorous yet customized process and deeply engaged, personal service lets me help each client define, pursue and achieve their specific goals.

With 32 years of experience, respected credentials and ongoing training and study, I have the knowledge and skills to handle complex financial circumstances. As a practicing Branch Manager, I have personal relationships with highly skilled specialists throughout the firm should a more esoteric need arise.

I am a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®), which the Wall Street Journal called “the most significant credential”1 and requires more than 1,000 hours of study to complete. I earned a B.S. in Business Information Systems from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as an Executive Certificate in Financial Planning from Georgetown University.

I live in Great Falls, VA, and am the proud father of two adult children. I enjoy collecting wine, hiking and the theatre.

Helping You Stay On Track

Every financial plan requires regular adjustment. With so many variables and uncertainties, an effective plan must have built-in flexibility and agility.

My process emphasizes adjustment, and includes a series of metrics and analyses. Some examples:
  • Current Net Cash Flow
Life can intercede with your financial plans in many ways. Overspending is a common concern, so we monitor cash flow and use statistics to indicate any needed adjustment.

For example, after each year, we would compare your expected spending to your actual spending. If your spending exceeded the plan’s projection, we would determine if it was an anomaly. If not, we would measure the impact of higher spending and seek appropriate adjustments.
  • Downside Risk Analysis
Investing involves risk. That’s a fact of life. I believe in targeting a required return at the lowest possible risk, and recommend an asset allocation strategy that reflects that approach.

However, changes in market conditions and other factors can affect our initial. Some of these changes may increase your “downside” risk beyond your comfort zone. So, in addition to re-balancing your portfolio to reflect the initial asset allocation, we would analyze your current asset allocation to determine if it is appropriate for the current environment.

Clients should consult their tax advisor for matters involving taxation and tax planning and their attorney for matters involving trust and estate planning and other legal matters.

5Morgan Stanley offers a wide array of brokerage and advisory services to its clients, each of which may create a different type of relationship with different obligations to you. Please consult with your Financial Advisor to understand these differences.

6Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC (“Morgan Stanley”), its affiliates and Morgan Stanley Financial Advisors or Private Wealth Advisors do not provide tax or legal advice. Clients should consult their tax advisor for matters involving taxation and tax planning and their attorney for legal matters.

7Morgan Stanley’s investment advisory programs may require a minimum asset level and, depending on your specific investment objectives and financial position, may not be suitable for you. Please see the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC program disclosure brochure (the “Morgan Stanley ADV”) for more information in the investment advisory programs available. The Morgan Stanley ADV is available at www.morganstanley.com/ADV.

9The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria.

10Alternative Investments are speculative and include a high degree of risk. An investor could lose all or a substantial amount of his/her investment. Alternative investments are suitable only for qualified, long-term investors who are willing to forgo liquidity and put capital at risk for an indefinite period of time.

11An investment in an exchange-traded fund involves risks similar to those of investing in a broadly based portfolio of equity securities traded on exchange in the relevant securities market, such as market fluctuations caused by such factors as economic and political developments, changes in interest rates and perceived trends in stock prices. The investment return and principal value of ETF investments will fluctuate, so that an investor's ETF shares, if or when sold, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

12Tax laws are complex and subject to change. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC (“Morgan Stanley”), its affiliates and Morgan Stanley Financial Advisors and Private Wealth Advisors do not provide tax or legal advice and are not “fiduciaries” (under ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code or otherwise) with respect to the services or activities described herein except as otherwise provided in writing by Morgan Stanley and/or as described at www.morganstanley.com/disclosures/dol . Individuals are encouraged to consult their tax and legal advisors (a) before establishing a retirement plan or account, and (b) regarding any potential tax, ERISA and related consequences of any investments made under such plan or account.

13Insurance products are offered in conjunction with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC’s licensed insurance agency affiliates.

14Structured Investments are complex and not suitable for all investors, and there is no assurance that a strategy of using structured product for wealth preservation, yield enhancement, and/or interest rate risk hedging will meet its objectives.

15Participating in a new issue/syndicate is subject to availability and suitability. IPOs are highly speculative and may not be suitable for all investors because they lack a stock-trading history and usually involve smaller and newer companies that tend to have limited operating histories, less-experienced management teams, and fewer products or customers. Also, the offering price of an IPO reflects a negotiated estimate as to the value of the company, which may bear little relationship to the trading price of the securities, and it is not uncommon for the closing price of the shares shortly after the IPO to be well above or below the offering price.
