Walking the Thin Line: Apps that Help You Avoid the Trap of Overspending

Consistently spending more than you intend—or can afford—can have an impact on your financial future. Whether it’s buying on impulse, using credit too often, or not having enough savings, there are a plethora of reasons why you might spend more than you anticipate.

Having a budget and tracking your expenses against that budget can help you manage your spending so you stay on track to achieve your short- and long-term financial goals. Here are five budget apps and personal finance tools you can use to help you keep your spending in line:*
  • Mint
The market leader in budgeting management, Mint syncs with your bank accounts, retirement accounts, credit cards and more. The app automatically updates and categorizes your transactions, providing you a snapshot of your spending in real time. With Mint, you can track your bills, create budgets and receive suggestions based on your spending. You can also check your free credit score as often as you like, and get tips to help improve it.
  • Prism
This free app offers an easy way to organize and pay your bills by bringing them all together on one platform.
  • PocketGuard
This budgeting app links to all of your financial accounts and helps you track your spending against your budget throughout the months. It also has a feature that helps you find opportunities to save on recurring monthly service costs such as your phone and internet bills.
  • Albert
Albert keeps track of all of your accounts and provides actionable recommendations for improving your financial health. The app automatically creates a budget based on your spending habits, bills and income, and sets aside a portion of your funds in a savings account. For a monthly fee, you can use the Albert Genius feature to text human experts for personalized advice on topics like saving for a goal, paying down debt or investing.
  • You Need a Budget (YNAB)
Instead of relying on traditional budgeting buckets, YNAB helps you build a budget based on your income, with the goal of giving every dollar a “job”. These “jobs” include everything from living expenses and savings to investments and debt payments. The basic idea is that, by leaving no dollar unaccounted for, you will need to think about every dollar you spend. YNAB offers a free trial for 34-days but then requires a monthly fee.
As your needs and financial goals become more complex, you may find that apps and online tools are not enough. Consider reaching out to a Financial Advisor who is committed to understanding your unique financial challenges and aspirations and helping you achieve the future you envision.

7An investment in an exchange-traded fund (ETF) involves risks similar to those of investing in a broadly based portfolio of equity securities traded on exchange in the relevant securities market, such as market fluctuations caused by such factors as economic and political developments, changes in interest rates and perceived trends in stock prices. The investment return and principal value of ETF investments will fluctuate, so that an investor’s ETF shares, if or when sold, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of an exchange-traded fund (ETF) before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information about the ETF. To obtain a prospectus, contact your Financial Advisor or visit the ETF company’s website. Please read the prospectus carefully before investing.
